Its design is inspired by the pavois, the iconic shield used during the traditional water jousting tournaments of Sète, in southern France. At its center stands the Poufre, the mythical octopus said to demand a ray of sunlight each year to illuminate the darkness of the sea.
Beneath the octopus, a radiant rising sun recalls the eternal struggle between darkness and light.

The Legend of the Poufre
Long ago, a gigantic octopus terrorized the fishermen of Sète.
One man, however, dared to approach the creature. The Poufre confessed that it sought neither revenge nor treasure—it simply wished for a ray of sunlight to brighten its dark underwater home.
For seven years, the fisherman returned every summer solstice with a single ray of sunlight.
But when only one ray remained, he realized that the sun must continue to shine for the world. He transformed that final ray into a spear and struck the Poufre in the eye.
Since that day, the sun has continued to rise over the Mediterranean.
